Jazz Capital Events’ Second Year Providing Live Music For The Annual Charity Event
The 2007-08 New York Rangers and members of the Rangers Alumni Association were joined by Rangers fans and contributors for a day on the links and a special tribute to Rangers Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert.
Rod Gilbert, the highest-scoring Ranger of all-time, was the guest of honor. Gilbert, the longtime Rangers Alumni Association president, has been a driving force in the team’s community relations efforts since rejoining the organization 18 years ago. In his additional role of Director, Special Projects and Community Relations Representative, he is a year-round ambassador for the team.
The annual charity classic took place this year at the Old Oaks Country Club and the Brae Burn Country Club, both in Purchase, NY.
Attending Rangers Alumni included Bill Chadwick, Ron Duguay, Emile Francis, Adam Graves, Vic Hadfield, Harry Howell, Dave Maloney, Stephane Matteau, Bob Nevin, Pete Stemkowski, Walter Tkaczuk, Steve Vickers, and Gilles Villemure.
Jazz Capital’s group provided the perfect background entertainment during the cocktail hour with the instrumentation of organ, saxophone, and drums. Performing organ soul-jazz classics by artists like Jimmy Smith, Eddie Harris, and Jack McDuff, along with jazz standards by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Duke Ellington, the group entertained at the perfect volume. Guests were able to converse, but those who were interested came closer to the band to appreciate their sound. Among those spotted nodding to the band in approval was Adam Graves, the former Rangers player. Graves also had some kind words for the man being honored that day, Rod Gilbert, “I don’t like to overuse this term, but he’s a ‘legendary’ player,” said Graves. “When you think of the New York Rangers, you think of Rod Gilbert.”
